Keeping Healthy, Happy and Well - Important Rules & Tips
In China people pay their doctors while they are in health and cease to
pay them when they become ill. This is a much more logical method than
ours, and the chances are that in time we will work out something along
the same lines. Except for cases of epidemic diseases, it is very
likely that in the years to come it will be an acknowledgment of
carelessness or ignornnce to suffer from preventable diseases of any
kind. There are certain rules which we can lay down that will help
greatly in keeping us well and happy if we will only live up to them.
* In the first place, we must have sufficient sleep so that the nervous
system is rested and refreshed regularly, and the nerve cells filled up
and made ready for the work ahead of them. A great many people are
nervous and irritable and do not produce anywhere near their best work
because of insufficient sleep, over-late hours, or wrong sleeping
conditions. To rest well the sleeper must have an abundance of fresh,
pure air. Many people awaken with a headache because the bed stands
hack in a pocket where there is not n free circulation, or because of
too much clothing, light which shines in and disturb the rest or an
uncomfortable bed. No one can rest properly upon a lumpy, uneven
mattress. The body should be able to relax and stretch out without
strain of any kind.
* To keep well it is very necessary to eat tbe right kind of food. Many
a child has been, blamed for inattention mischlevousness or stupidity
in school who was merely suffering from the the wrong diet.
Malnutrition means undernourishment. The individual may have enough to
eat but it may not be of the right character. In those parts, children
threatened with this trouble were found to be below par physically and
mentally. Today they are not kept in after school for their lack of
proper progress, but the trouble is corrected gradually but surely
through the use of what is known as an Iodine Diet.
* Few people drink enough. It is not wise to wash down each mouthful at
meals with ice cold water or anything, else, but many authorities now
approve of drinking us much as the appetite dictates at meals, but the
liquid should not be taken when there is any solid food in the mouth.
This should be thoroughly masticated and swallowed. Ice cold beverages
which chill the stomach and scalding hot ones are to be avoided.
The average adult should drink from two to three quarts of liquid a
day. This may include milk, soup, tea and coffee, and water. Little
children should have a drink of cool, fresh water at least once every
waking hour as they are often fretful for a drink which they cannot ask
for.
* If you are not thriving or you are underweight or over-weight, or
ailing in any way, it will be a real economy to have a physical
examination at the hands of a competent pbysician. Tell him exactly the
nature of your diet - how much liquid you drink each twenty-four hours;
how much milk you take; fresh fruits and leafy vegetables for the
vitamines, as well as yeast foods, and then if he thinks best to
recommend some change in your diet, follow it as long as he considers
it wise to do so. Most people diet for a meal or two or perhaps a week
and then get tired of it and go buck to their old habits. It takes time
to remedy a condition which has been slow in coming on.
* The clothing should be suited to the weather and undue and
unnecessary exposure avoided. Even the birds and furry creatures put on
heavier outer garments in cold weather.
* Regular cure of the teeth means brushing morning and night at least.
A good dentifrice should be used and the brush kept by itself and
frequently scalded.
It should be discarded when the brush begin to come out. Once in six
month a dentist should look the teeth over an repair small breaks.
* Correct care or the body in point of keeping it clean and suitably
clothed is essential. A weekly bath is not sufficient for any person of
refinement or understanding. The body is covered with millions of
little pores or months which give out gases, perspiration and other
substancea. These often attract dust and soon become clogged and yet
the skin is called the third lung of the body. That is, we breath
through it.
The story is told of an ancient king who wished a beautiful child to
take a striking part in a pageant. So he stripped him nude and had himn
coated with gold paint. The child died.
It is a well-known fact that a burn covering a limited area will cause death.
The body must be kept clean—scalp and all. The head should be bathed as
often as the nature of one's work requires, that hair and scalp shall
be free from dust and oily secretions.
A quick sponge bath in the morning with tepid water or a quick plunge
in cold water if one can stand this with a couple of weekly, baths with
warm water and soap and daily rubbing with a Turkish towel will keep
the skin free.
* If you and I are going to keep well there is an important rule which
is must follow. It is to think and spet kindly at all times. We can
pity people who do wrong and try to help their. But we should remember
that though of anger, jealousy, worry, or anxiety create body poisons
which seriously afect the health. In the same way desire to be of
service, a love of humanity, and a willingness to tbink the be of
everyone is one of the best tonic a beautifiers anyone can, use.
